How did Postiz grow to $200K MRR in a crowded market?
Nevo David open sourced Postiz and marketed it as the open source social media scheduler to technical users that Hootsuite and Buffer ignored. Open source releases gave him a legitimate reason to post on Reddit, where each launch got 200,000 to 300,000 views. He then kept finding new places to go viral instead of relying on posting on X.

Social media schedulers have existed for about 20 years. Hootsuite and Buffer are giants. Nevo David still grew Postiz past $200,000 MRR in that market.
He says the software is good, but that is not why it worked. It worked because of how he does distribution.
His first product failed because the market was too small
Before Postiz there was Gitroom. Nevo had been consulting for open source companies on marketing, so he built a SaaS to help open source projects launch and earn GitHub stars.
The problem: it was one of the most niche markets he could have picked. A few well funded companies needed it. Almost nobody else did. Postiz is the opposite. The number of people who can use a social media scheduler never really runs out.
He had written all the code by hand and did not want to throw it away. So he asked his designer for a mass market design, changed some features, and relaunched it as Postiz.
How he stood out in a 20 year old category
The big schedulers all talk to the same people: marketers and agencies. Nevo went after technical people instead.
He came from open source, so he open sourced everything and marketed Postiz as the open source social media scheduler. That served an audience nobody was serving: people who wanted to self host.
The launch version had fewer features and looked worse than it does today. But it had an edge, and the edge is what people respond to.
Why open source made Reddit work
Reddit dislikes self promotion. Posts get removed and accounts get banned. Even when a moderator approves a promotional post, the people in the community still do not like it.
Open source changed that. A new release of a free, self hostable tool is something people actually wait for, so posting each new version was welcome. Nevo says every launch post got at least 200,000 to 300,000 views.
He kept doing open source launches, kept growing the GitHub star count, and that is how Postiz got into the market.
Same product, different words
Gitroom and Postiz were almost the same platform. The reaction was not.
- Gitroom's message: a tool to help you market your open source project. Developers replied with puke emojis. For pure developers, the word marketing does not land.
- Postiz's message: a social media scheduling tool. He avoided the word marketing completely. People called it amazing.
Same software. The positioning decided whether it succeeded or failed.
His first question for any product: where can this go viral?
If a product cannot go viral again and again, he says the only options left are ads or SEO. Posting your tool on X does not work, because everyone is doing it. So he reverse engineers where virality is available.
- Reddit. One of the only platforms where a brand new account with no followers can get hundreds of thousands of views. One or two early upvotes are enough to start getting visibility.
- UGC on fresh accounts. Platforms now push content to the people who want it and do not care how old the account is. Founders book creators to post daily from new accounts, sometimes for around $20 a video or less, until one format takes off. Then they repeat that format.
- Trends. When a big model release is rumored, he prepares content with that name in the title and publishes the moment it ships. With budget, he pays people to quote repost the launch article, usually $60 to $350 each, or about $3,000 to $6,000 per campaign.
One condition: you have to sell an outcome. A video about scheduling posts will not go viral. A video about making money by clipping YouTube videos, or getting millions of views with automated slideshows, can.
Stop doing what is not working
Posting on X every day and calling it building in public can bring one or two customers. It will not get you to 100 trials a week, and it will not change if you keep going.
It is just as important to stop the things that are not working as it is to find the ones that are.
What gets a SaaS past $10K MRR
Nevo's answer is speed on new distribution. When a new platform or marketplace appears, he asks whether Postiz can be the first tool listed there. Postiz was the first social media scheduler on the Cursor marketplace, and he says it brought in a lot of trials.
Growth also compounds after a threshold. He says Postiz is now growing by 2 or even 3K a day, something that was not possible when it was at $21K MRR.
A personal brand people actually want to follow
He has seen accounts with 100,000 followers get almost no engagement and accounts with 8,000 get a lot. The difference is whether people follow for the value.
- Be the expert in one thing in your market. For him that is distribution.
- Stick to that persona. Unrelated posts attract followers who skip your real content, and that lowers your reach.
The pattern across all of it: Postiz did not win on features. It won because Nevo treats distribution as the product.
Questions this talk answers
How do you promote a product on Reddit without getting banned?
Nevo David's answer is to give Reddit something it wants. Reddit users dislike self promotion, but they welcome new releases of a free, open source tool. He also avoided the word marketing in his launch posts. The same product framed as marketing for developers got negative comments, while a social media scheduling tool was well received.
Does building in public get customers?
According to Nevo David, posting daily progress on X can bring one or two customers, but it will not scale to something like 100 trials a week. He recommends stopping channels that do not produce customers and looking for a place where the product can go viral repeatedly, such as Reddit or UGC on new accounts.
How much does UGC on new accounts cost?
Nevo David says founders book creators to post daily from brand new accounts for around $20 a video or less, because they are not paying for an existing audience. The goal is to keep posting until one format goes viral, then repeat it. It only works if the content sells an outcome people want.
What helps a SaaS get past $10K MRR?
Nevo David points to moving first on new distribution. Postiz was the first social media scheduler listed on the Cursor marketplace, which he says brought many trials. He also says growth compounds after a threshold: Postiz now grows by 2 to 3K a day, which was not possible at $21K MRR.
